Auto Gordian Knot (AutoGK) is a freeware. It Simplifies the DVD to AVI/DivX/XviD conversion process for people new. It also supports other MPEG2 sources, such as HDTV, DVB captures and transport streams.
This is the simplest conversion tool I have come across so far.
